A glacial wall of denser-than-dense s ound. Dallas Texas=E2=80=99 Frozen Soul lives up to their name as the so und of death metal at its most cold and classic. Riff after slow\, grinding riff\, there=E2=80=99s no mistaking the themes of isolation and suffering that permeate the quintet=E2=80=99s massive sonic missives. From the first note of the Century Media debut\, Crypt of Ice\, it's like the march of G ame of Thrones=E2=80=99 Night King put to sound: nothing subtle about it at all. =E2=80=9CThe feeling I=E2=80=99m getting from playing in Frozen So ul is powerful in a way I wasn=E2=80=99t getting from other bands I=E2=80 =99ve played in before\,=E2=80=9D says frontman Chad Green. =E2=80=9CThe sound. The lyrics. Even the logo itself has a harshness to it that just fee ls powerful and cold. Add to that the depression of dealing with real li fe and the venomous people that can inhabit it and the vibe of the band just makes sense.=E2=80=9D Frozen Soul=E2=80=99s brand of straightforwar d\, in-your-face death metal is a gasp of fresh air in a genre that=E2=80=99 s stretched the very limits of technicality. Fully formed in 2018\, the q uintet has rapidly made a name for itself and churned the underground with a sound that evokes the old school sound of bands like Obituary\, Mortici an and Bolt Thrower. That reverence for death metal=E2=80=99s roots was apparent from Frozen Soul=E2=80=99s initial four-song Encased In Ice demo ( which includes a cover of Mortician=E2=80=99s =E2=80=9CWitch=E2=80=99s Cove n=E2=80=9D) that was released in early 2019 on California's cave dwellin g\, knuckle dragging\, Maggot Stomp Records. Not that Frozen Soul=E2=80=99 s journey has exactly been overnight. The band=E2=80=99s roots can be etche d back to 2007 in Green=E2=80=99s time as drummer in Metallic Hardcore t urned Death Metal band\, End Times. With early influences including Trial\, R ingworm and Integrity or Texas=E2=80=99 heroes\, Iron Age\,=E2=80=9D he re calls. =E2=80=9CThat led me back to my roots =E2=80=93 which was\, of course \, bands like Metallica\, and Slayer. From there I fell down the rabbit ho le into bands like Grave\, Bolt Thrower and Obituary. Eventually\, I realized that even if I was playing hardcore\, all we were doing was writing deat h and thrash riffs\, anyways!=E2=80=9D Blame it on the power of the blunt-fo rce riff and a love for death metal=E2=80=99s past\, but in part\, blame i t on being a band from Texas\, a state whose metal roots run deep. From Pant era to Power Trip\, sheer heaviness runs in Frozen Soul=E2=80=99s home st ate=E2=80=99s musical bloodstream. =E2=80=9CI think being from here gives a ny band some big shoes to fill\,=E2=80=9D states Chad. =E2=80=9CThat=E2 =80=99s why Texas has so many great metal\, punk\, and hardcore bands.=E2=80 =9D A chance 2016 meeting with guitarist Michael Munday at a local comic book shop over a game of Magic: The Gathering laid the foundation for F rozen Soul. The two had an instant chemistry and shared love for the likes of games\, music and well of course\, Bolt Thrower\, that became the primor dial ooze from which Frozen Soul would eventually emerge. =E2=80=9CIt al l started when we were trying to rekindle End Times\, were writing riffs tha t were a little too heavy for what End Times was going for\,=E2=80=9D rec alls Chad. =E2=80=9CThe first full song that we wrote for Frozen Soul was =E2=80=98Hand of Vengeance=E2=80=99\, which came together quickly! It had a different sort of influence and pushed us to do something new which beca me Frozen Soul.=E2=80=9D With End Times guitarist and Crypt of Ice produ cer/mixer Daniel Schmuck =E2=80=93 who has also worked with the likes of Cr eeping Death and Power Trip =E2=80=93 Frozen Soul came together quickly. Bassist\, and Tattoo Artist Samantha Mobley\, along with Drummer Brady Tripp would fill in the starting lineup and by early 2019\, the band recorded their inaugural demo and played a near sold-out first show in March\, openin g a stacked bill topped by death metal contenders\, Blood Incantation and Necrot. =E2=80=9CWe had quite a few people from our hometown at the show that had no idea we were a local band\, asking where we were touring from. =E2=80=9D says Chad. The band circulated through members which led to th e addition of Green's longtime friend and Drummer Matt Dennard\, together hi t the road to the West Coast by the Summer. In October they followed the West Coast tour up a run through the Midwest with thrash crossover monster s\, Plague Years. =E2=80=9CEvery show on both of our first two tours were great\, which felt incredible\, especially for a band with just one four-son g demo!=E2=80=9D the frontman admits. A steady diet of in between local gigs with the likes of Gatecreeper\, Exhumed\, Vader and Obituary\, really got their name out there among the local Texas scene\, but hitting the froze n roads of the east coast in January 2020 with Death Thrashers Steel Bea ring Hand brought their icy reign full circle solidifying their spot nation ally. With every show\, the band became a more oppressive wall of sound\, a snow-machine enhanced atmosphere. =E2=80=9CThe Frozen Steel tour in Ja nuary was one of the best experiences in my life and playing a packed show at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn was a huge accomplishment for us\,=E2=80=9D re members Chad. =E2=80=9CIt was one of those moments\, playing a legendary clu b that you never imagined being able to play that makes you ask yourself \, have we finally arrived\, have we made it?!.=E2=80=9DIn truth\, Frozen Soul had arrived and both fans and the metal press had given them the stamp of approval. Just a few months after its release\, the band=E2=80=99s singul ar demo-turned-EP was already winning them high praise in many year-end cri tics=E2=80=99 polls. Brooklyn Vegan pegged Frozen Soul for one of the mo st anticipated metal albums of 2020 and Invisible Orange=E2=80=99s writer R hys Williams gave Encased In Ice the #4 spot in his Top 10 records of 20 19. In another surprise turn\, the band received a call from Century Medi a and found themselves inking a worldwide deal with the label. =E2=80=9C We were surprised ourselves at just how quickly this had all come together\, =E2=80=9D Chad admits. =E2=80=9CBut honestly\, we 100% never expected thi s.=E2=80=9D With its line-up filled out by Steel Bearing Hand bassist\, Chri s Bonner playing second guitar\, Frozen Soul entered the studio in early March 2020 to record its first full-length with former guitarist Daniel Sch muck handling production and mixing duties. While the shadow of the encr oaching Covid-19 pandemic loomed over the recording\, the band got focused a nd delivered. Crypt of Ice is nothing short of a breath of very fresh an d very cold air on death metal=E2=80=99s fiery landscape. From re-recorded demo tracks including the frigid call-to-arms of =E2=80=9CEncased In Ice =E2=80=9D and the savage frost blister of Wraith of Death\, to the brutal\, p ummeling and momentous guitar churn of Arctic Stranglehold\, Frozen Soul have delivered a record that embraces the genre=E2=80=99s past whilst pushi ng death metal forward with frigid force.
