A Gaga class and movement research with Smadar Goshen
6. September 2025, 11 bis 14 Uhr
Ort: TanzAreal Karlsruhe
The movement research based workshop features a Gaga class and improvisation session exploring tools for development choreographic materials. The sessions offer experimentation with different strategies of turning on our attentiveness to physical experience as well as to our world of fantasy while moving. Via the body we will evoke the connective pathways between movement, sensation and mental perception.
The workshop aims to stimulate creative force and easy body-mind flow. It is created to connect individuals with the interest, passion and unique language lies in their body.
About Gaga -
Gaga is the movement language developed by Ohad Naharin throughout many years, parallel to his work as a world-renowned choreographer. Gaga classes are predicated on a deep activation of the body and physical sensations. We provide a framework for discovering and strengthening the body and adding flexibility, stamina, agility, and skills including coordination and efficiency while stimulating the senses and the imagination. Participants awaken numb areas, increase their awareness of habits, and improve their efficiency of movement inside multilayered tasks, and they are encouraged to connect to pleasure inside moments of effort. The research of Gaga is in a continual process of evolution, and the classes vary and develop accordingly.

About Smadar Goshen -
Smadar Goshen is a dancer and choreographer. She creates pieces for stage, focused on body and movement, since 2011. She holds a BA in Dance and an MA in Choreography from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. In addition Goshen is a certified Gyrotonic & Gyrokinesis trainer and a certified Gaga instructor.
Her work often explores the tension and relation between individuals and the systems they inhabit — biological, social, political, and geological. As a result, Goshen is busy with communication approaches, survival strategies, adaptive patterns and the way it is engraved in, and expressed by, the human body. Many of her performances place the audience close to the performers, fostering deep sensory engagement. Named one of the 10 most promising dance pioneers in the 2023

yearbook, Smadar is currently part of the Réseau GRAND LUXE residency program, supported by Theater Freiburg. From 2024–2026, she received a three-year grant from the City of Stuttgart and the Landesverband Freie Tanz- und Theaterschaffende BW. Smadar’s works has been presented internationally, including platforms such as Suzanne Dellal Centre (Tel Aviv), Machol Shalem Dance Festival (Jerusalem), Dance Waves Festival (Cyprus), Derida Dance Center (Sofia), Theater RAMPE and E-werk (Germany) among others.
