Tom Hapgood grew up as a typical “Army brat” and spent 5 years of his youth in Karlsruhe, mostly scuttling around ruined castles and all-day heavy metal festivals. Currently, he is a graphic design professor at the University of Arkansas. „Lost Letters” (Hapgood Press, 2025) is his first novel.
Professor Jason Carr, with a possible dementia diagnosis in his future, agrees to have his DNA tested to look for the telltale markers. A shocking revelation in the results compels him to return to the decommissioned American military base in Germany where he lived in the late 1980s. As a graphic design historian and researcher, the trip also enables him to visit a monastery in the Eifel mountains of Germany to continue his study of Gothic typography and transcendent messaging. When confronted with a crossover of medieval history, the complexity of the 20th century war years, and his own path, he has to choose between what to keep secret and what needs to be told.
Admission free, donations to the Friends of the American Library Karlsruhe e.V. cheerfully accepted.
